The Battery Factory Theater was founded under the name Theater Under the Stars in 1993 as a nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation and a registered charity with the New Jersey State Attorney General, Department of Consumer Affairs.

Theater Under the Stars is an Associate Member of the New Jersey Theater Alliance, the association of professional nonprofit theaters in New Jersey.

Theater Under the Stars is the resident theater of the South Orange Performing Arts Center.  It provides Art Education for children in grades K-12 through the Youth Conservatory.  Guiding Stars brings performances to people unable to travel.  It provides guided tours for people with disabilities.
